In India, lack of female literacy (only 39.42% in 1991 census), a high fertility rate and low usage of contraceptives are probably the foremost reasons for lack of success in population control. Neither Catholics nor Muslims favour birth control measures. We at GBSS are trying to educate the peoples to control the population by some effective measures which can be employed to control population growth: like Education, Age of marriage should be raised, Family planning methods & Spread Awareness etc.p>
India was the first country to adopt family planning (in 1951) as the government sponsored programme. But after the efforts of Indian government for about 50 years, birth rate in India has come down only slightly (only from 41.7 in 1951 to 28.3 in 1997 per 1,000 per year). This showed that voluntary family planning programme was not very successful. In 1976, Indian government thought of introducing a programme of compulsory sterilization which required one parent to undergo sterilization after a couple had produced two children. But due to public resistance, this programme was again changed to voluntary programme.
